Hocking Hills Canopy Tours, OH

Zippity do da!

“Bird’s eye view” is usually little more than a cliché, but in the case of Hocking Hills Canopy Tours, that’s exactly what you’ll experience during the two hours you’ll spend up to 60 feet above the forest floor, zipping from tree to tree, Tarzan and Jane style.

“Thrill seeker meets nature lover” is how Julieann Eckel, co-owner of the project and confessed thrill seeker herself, describes the experience. It's the first full-scale canopy tour to our region, complete with 10 ziplines and four canopy-level suspension bridges.

The nearly three-quarter mile tour takes you from platform to platform, each nestled like a treehouse in the arms of a giant oak, beech, sycamore or maple tree. Each zipline (they range from 100-plus to 500-plus feet in length) is named after a natural feature or characteristic you can expect to see: Mighty Oak, Eagle View, Cave Walk, River Run, Leap of Faith.

“It took my breath away,” says Donna Covert of Rockbridge, OH, who got a preview tour. “I’m totally scared of heights (but) it’s definitely a safe thing.” The well-trained guides keep you safe while respecting your personal space and also respecting your need for speed, if that’s what you’ve got. You can expect to hit the 30-35 miles per hour range on some of your zips.

The tour is open seven days a week beginning in May. Reservations are recommended, especially for groups.

Where it’s at: 45 minutes from Columbus in Rockbridge, OH. Right off of US Route 33, turn onto County Road 10 (look for the Valero gas station) and then take the immediate right.
